The City of Marina, in collaboration with the Monterey County Free Libraries (MCFL) System, initiated efforts to significantly increase library services to residents and businesses in Marina and Monterey County. This mutually beneficial project has been accomplished through the purchase of a site and construction of our new, state of the art library.
The library is a place not only for collections of the most valued and enduring of human artifacts –the book—but also for the new technologies that provide access to information to anyone who asks. It is a comfortable place for seniors, youth and children, newcomers and serious scholars, business people and parents.
Additionally, special spaces that serve the after school and weekend interests of children and young adults are integral parts of the new facility, as are provisions for adult literacy programs and access to resources available through global Internet links.
The new building includes a wing to house the administrative headquarters for the Monterey County Free Libraries System, anchoring a countywide system of neighborhood branches.
The City of Marina, in addition to its agreement to locate the library on a hill above the attractive Locke Paddon Park, placed a down payment on the property. Subsequent fundraising within the city and through grants and foundations raised the balance of the funds necessary to complete the purchase of the land and our beautiful library was built and moved into one year ago (September 2007). This was truly a community effort and one everyone should be very proud of. |
